2018 KKD Winners

Sara Broad looks forward to studying Mechanical Engineering and Theater next fall at South Dakota State University. As a student at Malcolm High School, she has been active in vocal music, student council, one-act play production, and the National Honors Society. She was also a state and national qualifier in speech. Sara has served the community by volunteering as a Brightlights classroom assistant and at the Toyland for Kids event.
Sarah Brown is looking forward to earning her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Wayne State College. During her time at Seward High School, Sarah participated in Future Business Leaders of America, Future Farmers of America, Key Club, marching band, and concert band. She played soccer and was team captain and Academic All-State in volleyball.
William Henry wants his actions to have meaning in the world and plans to pursue a career in health care. He plans to attend Western Michigan University in the fall, studying Interdisciplinary Health Services. At Pennfield High School, he played varsity soccer and track and was involved in Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and National Honors Society. Community activities have included volunteer work with the Red Cross, North Avenue Youth Group, Empty Pew Project, and youth mission trips.
Myles Hoenes plans to study Graphic Design next fall at the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor Stamps School of Art and Design. In addition to participating in student government, theatre, the Passion Project, and the National Honors Society, he was a student representative for the Lakeview School Board and the Lakeview School Educational Foundation. He has also served the community through the Youth Alliance Committee of Battle Creek, the Glenn Cross Arts and Culture Committee, and the Bad Wolf Theatre Company.
As a future Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Samuel Hupp plans to study Chemistry. He intends to serve his country as long as possible, making positive impacts on society along the way. Samuel attended the International Baccalaureate program at Lincoln High School, where he was a trumpet section leader in the marching band, played in concert band, and participated in debate. He was also team captain in cross country and an Academic All-American in cross country and track.
Mariah Kitchen is interested in pursuing a career in Forensic Science after she earns a degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she has been awarded a Regent’s Scholarship. She participated in Lincoln Southwest Ambassadors, cheerleading and choir during her years at Southwest High School and spent time volunteering at Cavett Elementary School and with The Cat House and Wildlife Rescue.
Daniel Koshar will study Applied Mathematics and Physics at the Michigan Technological University and plans to eventually conduct extensive laboratory research. Throughout his high school years, he was involved in several theater productions through Homeschool Performing Arts. He also participated in his church choir and spent time volunteering at the Van Buren District Library as a librarian and at the True Vine Equestrian Center.
Sydni Kunc plans to study Elementary Education next fall at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. During her time at Wilber-Clatonia High School, she has participated in softball, cheerleading, tennis, the Future Farmers of America, and the senior class play. She was named an All-American Softball Cheerleader and an All-State Softball Honorable Mention. Her varied community activities have included working with Wilber Czech Days, Wilber Care Center, and Wilber-Clatonia Family Fun Night.
Autumn Loga plans to study Physical Therapy at Nebraska Wesleyan University this fall. At Malcolm Public Schools, she was involved with Skills USA, Future Business Leaders of America, four years of varsity softball, and the National Honors Society. She was also named to Academic All-State for softball in 2016 and 2017. She has been an active volunteer with Malcolm Field of Dreams, Vacation Bible School, and as a kindergarten classroom helper and teacher’s aide.
Logan Massey is looking forward to preparing for a career in business and will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While attending Pius X High School, Logan was involved in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and symphonic band. He helped in the Writing Resource Center and was a private Spanish tutor. In Boy Scouts, he earned his Eagle Scout rank, and he volunteered time with the Pioneer’s Park Nature Center and the Salvation Army.
Melanie McIntyre will study Pre-Medicine next fall at Michigan State University and plans to become a sports physician. At Pennfield High School, she was named to Academic All-Conference for both basketball and volleyball. She has helped with various youth basketball and volleyball camps over the years, and has volunteered in the Soup Kitchen.
Carson Neff enjoys working with numbers and spreadsheets and has therefore chosen to pursue a degree in Accountancy and Finance at Western Michigan University. At Gull Lake High School, he was involved in varsity track, junior varsity soccer, DECA, and the National Honor Society. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and has helped the community through highway clean-up, horse trials event parking, and ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
Joseph Nguyen is enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and plans to study Chemistry with the goal of working in a forensic science lab after graduation. Joseph has been active in Medical Club, Math Club, ACT Club, Boy/Girl Dance, and Strength and Conditioning at Pius High School. He played YMCA High School Basketball throughout his high school years and volunteered with the People’s City Mission, Matt Talbot Kitchen, and the Salvation Army.
Rachel Nichols will attend Indiana Wesleyan University this fall, majoring in Nursing. She eventually wants to work in a variety of specialities and units, including emergency room and trauma medicine, sexual assault response care, or even disaster care with the military. At East Kentwood High School, Rachel was active in the orchestra, swim team, and the National Honors Society.
Anna O’Keefe plans to enroll in Chemical Engineering at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., next fall. While attending Tekonsha High School, Anna has been involved with band, the high school talent show, the National Honor Society and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She was team captain for varsity softball, basketball and volleyball, and was named Academic All-State in volleyball. Her community activities included her church youth group and volunteering for the Special Olympics and the Christmas Basket Drive.
Jake Prochaska enjoys working and interacting with students in the special education program. Therefore, he plans to major in Secondary Special Education at Hastings College next fall. During his time at Centennial High School, Jake has been active in student council, National Honors Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and Future Farmers of America. He played football, ran track and earned third at state competition for wrestling.
Benjamin Rathjen hopes to one day start his own business and will begin studying Business Administration next fall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During his years at Norris High School, he has been active in the marching band, concert band, and pep band, the Future Business Leaders of America, and was a 2017 State Champion with Quiz Bowl. He attended Cornhusker Boys State and has volunteered with FoodNet, Inc., Adopt-A-Road, and Adopt-A-Family.
With strong love for math and art, Alice Richter is considering a major in Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln next fall. As a student at Elmwood-Murdock High School, Alice has been active in choir and plays the bari saxophone in band. She also participated in Quiz Bowl and her Student Innovation Challenge team placed first in competition. She has helped with the highway clean-up team from Elmwood Christian Church for the last three years.
Wesley Steward is looking forward to attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she will major in Pre-Health. While attending Palmyra High School, she was involved in varsity cheerleading, varsity volleyball, the National Honors Society, the musical, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has volunteered her time at Little Panther’s Cheer Camp, Boo at the Zoo, Oak Lake Clean-Up, and the Spouse Abuse Sexual Assault Crisis Center.
Isabelle Van Kirk has always wanted to be a health care professional, specifically a doctor. She is a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at a local care facility to learn more about patient care from all aspects. At Ashland-Greenwood High School, she has been involved in Student Ambassadors, Future Business Leaders of America, Speech, Drama, and the National Honors Society. She has volunteered with the Riverview Community Church and the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. In the fall, she will attend Nebraska Wesleyan University.

2017 KKD Winners

Luke Bartles will begin working on pre-health studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall. As a student at Lincoln Lutheran High School, Luke has been active in Student Council, golf, basketball, football and the National Honor Society. His community activities have included the Youth Leadership Lincoln class, ushering at his church, going on mission trips and helping with student hunger drives.
Hailey Bohac plans to study business administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall. While attending Bishop Neumann High School, Hailey has been involved in volleyball, dance, track, the National Honors Society and the Future Business Leaders of America. She has also been an active volunteer for the community, donating hours to groups including the St. Wenceslaus Godteens Program, Open Door Mission and Saunders Medical Center Nursing Home.
Kelly Broad plans to earn a degree in biological systems engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and pursue research positions after she graduates from Lincoln High School. During her high school years, she has been active in the Science Focus Program Science Olympiad, Lincoln High Slam Poetry, Zoo School yearbook and the Zoo School Key Club. She has served the community through volunteer work with Bright Lights, K-Kids and Pannier Labs on UNL’s East Campus.
Devon Michael Caler plans to enroll in computer hardware engineering with a minor in computer science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln next fall. While attending Seward High School, Devon has been involved with the Future Business Leader’s Association and the Key Club.
Ripley Creamer plans to earn a degree in biology through the academic transfer program at Southeast Community College and then transfer to a four-year institution and possibly go into a medical field so she can help others. At Dorchester Public High School, Ripley participated in volleyball, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honors Society, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), One Act and Girls’ State. She has been an active volunteer, spending more than 500 hours in service through FBLA, teaching Vacation Bible School, leading youth retreats, and various other volunteer activities.
Madison Eliker will attend Doane University in Crete this fall, majoring in Elementary Education with a Special Education endorsement. At Waverly High School, Madison has been active in Honors band, track, speech, honor roll and National Honors Society. She has spent time volunteering with Matt Talbot Kitchen, as a teacher’s assistant and as a mentor.
Avary Finch is looking forward to attending the University of Denver, where she will major in Education/Administration or Business. While attending Campus High School, she was a member of the Student Council, Theatre, the National Honors Society and the Mayors Youth Leadership Council. Her volunteer activities have included working with the City of Haysville Bike Path Advisory Committee, the USD 261 Board of Education and Riverfest.
Skye Free plans to study Pre-Law next fall at Peru State College. During her time at Norris High School, she has participated in the Future Farmers of Nebraska, Trap Shooting and Mock Trial. Her community activities have included working with City Impact, Lincoln Beream Church and L5 Youth Ranch.
Michael Gries plans to study biology and attend the pre-radiology program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was named Academic All-State for football at Pius X and was also active in track, the Pre-Med Club, Passport to Adventure Cliub, National Honors Society and the honor roll. He also spent time volunteering as a coach during football camp, an altar server and participates in paper, plastic and metal recycling projects.
Alexis Gress is looking forward to attending Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she will major in exercise science and minor in business. After she earns her bachelor’s degree, she will look at studying physical therapy at a medical university. While attending Waverly High School, she played softball for four years, soccer for two, earned a silver medal at state competition for FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), was involved in student council and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Megan Klenke plans to attend Concordia University in Seward next fall pursuing a degree in Secondary Education with a focus in Social Sciences. At Friend High School, she has been involved in basketball, softball and track, band, choir, One Act and Musicals, Quiz Bowl and the National Honor Society. She has volunteered with various organizations in the community and helped facilitate five Red Cross blood drives.
Katelyn Kohn looks forward to studying environmental science next fall at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. As a student at Lincoln Southeast High School, she was active in the orchestra, pottery club and Young Life Club. Katelyn has served the community by volunteering at the Capitol Humane Society, the Pioneers Park Nature Center and the People’s City Mission.
Kaitlynn Kool plans to study political science next fall at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. In addition to participating in band, choir, Quiz Bowl and Student Council at Friend High School, she has served her community through various volunteer activities, including planting flowers and cleaning at Friend Manor.
David Nguyen will study pre-health at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to follow his lifelong dream of working in the health field. He hopes to be a nurse practitioner after attending graduate school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. During his career at Pius X High School, David participated in weightlifting, Pius X Medical Club, Frisbee Club and Landscaping Club. He has spent time teaching children about religion and the Vietnamese Culture through the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement and he has volunteered for the Peoples City Mission.
Kevin Nguyen enjoys working with technology and plans to major in computer science/programming at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He participated in track and field, Engineering Club, National Honors Society and peer tutoring during his career at Lincoln Northeast High School while volunteering with the youth group at Linh Quang Buddhist Center, Boo at the Zoo and the Salvation Army.
Tate Peterson plans to pursue a four-year degree from the University of Nebraska in either Lincoln or Omaha, but hasn’t yet determined his field of study. Tate participated in track, band, Academic Decathlon, basketball, Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honors Society at Wahoo High School. He served his community through volunteer activities through his church youth group, and at an area animal shelter and a local nursing home.
Amanda Suhr is looking forward to preparing for a career in nursing and will attend Creighton University, Bryan College of Nursing or Nebraska Wesleyan University. While attending Lincoln Northeast High School, Amanda was involved in soccer, Pershing Pals, National Honor Society, Rocket Crew and basketball. She served the community in various ways including United Way Jump Start, Vacation Bible School, Touching Hearts Preschool, and the Salvation Army.
The world of English and literature is beckoning Harriett Swager. She plans to attend Manhattan College in New York next fall and possibly have a career as a college professor as well as an author. At Climax-Scotts High School, she played softball and basketball for four years and has been involved in the Student Council, band and National Honor Society. She has also been active with her church, the youth group and the Catholic Heart Work Camp.
Isabella Trainor has set very specific goals for her future, planning to study biology at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and eventually fulfilling her dream of becoming a surgeon. At Lakeview High School, she has been involved in student government, Robotics Club, Key Club, Link Crew Mentor, Chinese Exchange Student Mentoring, and National Honors Society. She has also volunteered with the Binder Park Zoo Boo, the Food Bank and taught Sunday School.
Adam Ungvarsky is enrolled at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and plans to study religion and psychology. After his undergraduate experience, he would like to obtain a Master’s of Divinity with the ultimate goal of working with people of all religions. Adam has been active in swimming, marching band, jazz band, pep band, concert band and Students Together Against Cancer at Lincoln Southwest High School. He has also been active with Southwood Lutheran Church’s youth group.
Ashlynn Wilen is looking forward to earning her bachelor’s degree in English from Florida College. During her time at Joyful Journey Christian Homeschool, Ashlynn participated in chorus, volleyball and softball. She has logged volunteer hours wih the local library and the library’s youth advisory board.
Adam Zastrow has a great love for music and computers and plans to study computer science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall. During his time at Pius X High School, Adam has been active in track and field, Show Choir Band, Sotto Voce A Cappella Choir, Pius Players Theatre, and Ambassador Club. He has served the community by volunteering at the Pius X Phone-a-thon, the American Cancer Society and the Pius X Theatre Camp for Kids.
